Chequemates Club Closures
Mood:  sad
“Venue Closure due to repair work..........
We have discovered an issue last Thursday and with discussion with the Steward,  The Hopwas Club committee member, the collapsed floor has unearthed more major problems with the club building – bad news. Martin and Pauline told us they had to cancel a birthday party because of this. Had they not said anything I would not have known!. Subject to the club’s insurers approval, work will commence November 2/3 until 22nd affecting 2-3 weeks of our club , so we may have to close unless they would accommodate us in the bar, this I have not yet discussed with the club yet, but will keep you posted, if we can scale down to the bar or not. As you can see we have some features just booked I will contact them, leave the list as it is keep and eye on the blogs regarding club, room work, and call/e-mail to check work has not yet commenced. Unfortunately Steve Ragnall’s gig may be affected, and has suggested he postpone, so no more information as yet.

So we are there unless we say we are not!! just Check before you travel, or call 0121 354 4234

Thanks for your patience.”

We have made several festival appearances, pub and folk club guest spots, and .... a lively, performance engaging their audience is guaranteed..... Diverse and Different! They perform over a wide genre of music with jazz undertones on folk roots material, including music for ceilidh/barndances with freelance callers

“Experienced performers at all sorts of venues, of folk, some early, to roots music... great vocals from Sandra, with interesting, introductions and solo items on flute, bodhran/percussion, whistles and even Nepalese flute, and accompanying guitar. Tim’s brilliant finger -style acoustic/electric guitar, and indeed a soloist in his own right, on accordion and mandolin, adds colour and diversity of Claret’s sound. Claret’s repertoire, provides light, shade, and atmosphere, contrasting with rousing numbers, underpinned by solid bass playing, from Bryan with, sensitive rhythm and soloing, and accompanying vocals, plus a few lead songs too.”
    Birmingham Artsfest descript.
Clarets repertoire is a diverse and eclectic, different mix of English/folk roots, with influences of the rest of the British Isles to Europe on a fascinating array of instruments, always sparking a talking point from audiences. The sensitive arrangements of their music and song have an individuality, with a jazz-slant thrown in, not to be pigeon-holed! Claret are always in contact with their audiences, getting them to join in with the music, which is a must on an out-door stage presentation, apart from a brief mood change to one or two sensitive numbers.

Best Wishes,
Many thanks for our inclusion

Latest News, what we have been doing!
Mood:  energetic
Topic: Updates
Hello all,

Just an update on all the things we have been up to!! Shall put this on our blog too, on the web-site.
Lichfield Buskathon, last week we put in some of our raffle and the money collected on a rained off busk at Burntwood boat rally for the Lichfield Free Fuse festival. We have posted off £30.70 to them. Thanks for the contributions and to those who pledged in advance!

The Lichfield Festival spots were not so good due to weather, on the first set again rained off!! Then we performed totally acoustically in front of Lichfield Cathedral, with no promised PA as it was too wet after another downpour, but we did attract an audience!! If any of you are on Face book please befriend us/join us and a picture of us is there taken by Aiden Mullender, who organises the Jug of Punch Folk Club in Sutton , last Sundays of the month at the Sutton Coldfield, Town football Club, Coles Lane, Sutton Coldfield, thanks Aiden for coming! We are guest artists in September. They need better support so please try and go when able to keep folk alive in Sutton!

Tim’s solo event went well too at Middleton Hall, featuring two of his guitar pupils and Malcolm Gibbons guest jazz guitarist. Look out for some footage on U-tube when we have time will let you know when up and running, meanwhile look up Tim’s Myspace site.
Latest, was the Moot at Tamworth. our support spot on Friday went down well with the Karrivick sisters, and thanks to the organisers for booking us! Saturday we were on the Tamworth Castle Bandstand, Carl was booked on a magic show so Kim Rigby played amazing congas and drums on our set for the percussion on our set.
We are now off Sat morning to Bury St Edmunds, at the Constitutional Club, Guildhall St Bury St Edmunds, not the Milk Maid Folk Club, but hosted by them, to play on one of the Folk 21 series of showcases to promote gigs for folk artists in folk club venues and festivals, so wish us luck!!

At our club we look after artists unknown and offer them a gig if we think they are of the standard, otherwise these people would not get a gig, so this is all an extension of our cause. I don’t think our Cheque-Mates gig goers have been disappointed.
